“Fine art is knowledge made visible.” — Gustave Courbet
(For some strange reason, in my newspaper, the first five coded words were on the top line. Then there was a BIG gap, of about five or six lines of empty space, followed by a line that has the sixth coded word and the author. I have no idea if this was intentional on the part of the cryptoquote people, or just some flukie thing my newspaper did. Not knowing if something was missing kind of threw me for a bit. The “J” was long suspected to be the “E”, but I was reluctant to commit. My first impression of “RM” being “IS” was also tempered by the myriad other possibilities. But, I couldn’t come up with any other word for the sixth coded word, using those other possible letters, especially since the coded word began with a “P”. It couldn’t be pitiful. I considered moronic, but the three other coded words ending in “J” were unlikely to end in “C”. Very strange, indeed.) — YUR
PS. Given my druthers, I’m always going to go with the classic nude! Just consider yourself lucky I didn’t opt for

There were no such gaps in my paper, BUT – there was a black mark on the paper that looked very much like an apostrophe between the 6th and 7th letters of the last word. That led me to try “T” for the J’s but that led me nowhere. When I finally figured “KNOWLEDGE” for the 4th word, the rest started to fall into place.

My paper had 4 words on the first line, 2 more on the second, and the author on the third line. The lines were widely, but evenly, spaced. Like you, I figured ‘J’ was ‘E’. When I guessed ‘RM’ was ‘IS’ then I saw ‘visible’ and it fell together pretty quickly. But it took awhile and several wrong guesses before that correct guess.
This quote is also attributed to Alexa Gromko. I wonder who said it first?
ralis (and anonymous),
Something definitely is up with whoever puts out the cryptoquote! This is the third strange instance in about a week. Maybe they’re following Unclerave, but – unlike Jeff Knurek and David Hoyt with the Jumble – they’re doing it on the down-low, and they’re trying to mix it up a bit. Or, maybe terrorists have hijacked the Cryptoquote and they’re using it to signal their EVIL brethren! Someone call Homeland Security! Ralis! What’s your clearance level, these days???

Chabochi,
Thanks for not being anonymous! (It gets confusing when too many *anonymi* comment.) I don’t know why the internet is attributing a bunch of famous quotations to the Manager of Public Relations at AAA Colorado! (She’s the only one I could find!)
I’m deleting your identical comment, sent under “anonymous”, if you don’t mind.
