Clue/Question:  When the ship carrying tires started sinking it . . .

Answer:  TREADED WATER

(Not bad.  No difficult clue words.  Decent all around scrambling.  Moderately challenging puzzle.  WordPress did not recognize “treaded” as a verb tense . . . but dat ain’t my problem. From the searches, so far, I don’t think this one is going to win any prizes.  We were treated to a few tougher ones about a week ago, but since then they’ve all been kind of so-so.  Tougher ones are bound to cycle through . . . eventually.)   — YUR
