Pride of Baltimore Chorus, 1994.

Visual Description:  The Bulgarian Idol singer strikes again!

JENNIO  =  ENJOIN,  DREEME  =  REDEEM,  BLITAR  =  TRIBAL,  NAITAT  =  ATTAIN, FRYLUR  =  FLURRY,  FIEBLE  =  BELIEF —   Giving us:  ENNRERIAAFRRIF

Clue/Question:  When the singer skipped the chorus, it was a . . .

Answer:  REFRAIN REFRAIN

(Another good Sunday Jumble!  None of the clue words were gimmes.  And, the scrambling of the answer letters ensured that few were going  get it without, at least, a little work.  The biggest clue, for me, was that the  length of the two answer words was  identical.  And, SO many double letters were standing out in the answer letters, that I knew the answer was going to be repeating words.  Of course, the first “refrain” is the noun – a synonym for chorus, and the second the verb – to hold back, or abstain from.  I’m betting that most of you regulars were able to get this without my help.  Enjoy the First Day of Spring!  Dig deep for a few bucks, to send to the Red Cross, Care, Doctors Without Borders, or any other relief agency of your choice, for the people devastated by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear “meltdown” in Japan.  Do you think that the planet just might be trying to tell us something?  Or, do you really believe that it’s all cyclical, and sunspot related?)   — YUR

Refrain refrain makes no sense. The first refrain is intended to describe the type of refrain and therefore the correct expression would be ‘refrained refrain’ – the adjective “refrained” describing the noun “refrain”.

I think they were actually using a noun tense of the verb, for the second refrain. If that makes any sense at all!

Thanks a lot- I got the whole thing, but your explanation that the NOUN “refrain” is FIRST totally clarified the answer. I hadn’t seen it that way.

    Thanks!

    Thank you, Fred.

All I can do is call ’em as I see ’em! I can see truth’s pov, but you have to give these guys a little leeway. I’m not an English teacher. My grammar and punctuation may be a little suspect, at times, but I’m guessing that puns don’t always work out to be *perfect* English.

I think the guys are working hard to give us new challenges. I’m seeing improvement!
