The “Missing” Cryptoquotes

Friday, 03/11/11:

Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.”   — Peter Marshall

(I originally thought this was the game show host!  I guess this shows just how poorly read I am.)   — YUR

Saturday, 03/12/11:

The Ultimate aim of the ego is not to see something, but to be something.”   — Muhammad Iqbal

(Pakistan could use more men like this, in places of influence and authority.)   — YUR

Monday, 03/14/11:

I try to give people a different way of looking at their surroundings.  That’s art to me.”   — Maya Lin

(Another architect!  But, this time the quote does not specifically mention architecture.  It’s a nice, all-around artistic quote.)   — YUR

Truth

Image via Wikipedia

As a general rule, if you want to get at the truth, hear both sides and believe neither.”   — Josh Billings

(One of the greatest truths ever told!  Each side is going to bring a certain amount of bias to an issue.  The truthier truth is always going to lie somewhere in between.  Mr. Josh Billings definitely rocks!  Why can’t today’s populists have this clear a perspective?  No.  We get the FOX “News” clowns: Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck.  And, let’s not forget Clear Channel’s Rush Limbaugh.  Where would this country be without their sound and fury reasoning?  WHAT?!  Who said we’d be better off?  What are you, a SOCIALIST or something???  Enjoy the First Day of Spring, good people.  Be good, do good, my friends.)   — YUR

(On Time) Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 03/20/11

Visual Description:  The Bulgarian Idol singer strikes again!

JENNIO  =  ENJOIN,  DREEME  =  REDEEM,  BLITAR  =  TRIBAL,  NAITAT  =  ATTAIN, FRYLUR  =  FLURRY,  FIEBLE  =  BELIEF —   Giving us:  ENNRERIAAFRRIF

Clue/Question:  When the singer skipped the chorus, it was a . . .

Answer:  REFRAIN REFRAIN

(Another good Sunday Jumble!  None of the clue words were gimmes.  And, the scrambling of the answer letters ensured that few were going  get it without, at least, a little work.  The biggest clue, for me, was that the  length of the two answer words was  identical.  And, SO many double letters were standing out in the answer letters, that I knew the answer was going to be repeating words.  Of course, the first “refrain” is the noun – a synonym for chorus, and the second the verb – to hold back, or abstain from.  I’m betting that most of you regulars were able to get this without my help.  Enjoy the First Day of Spring!  Dig deep for a few bucks, to send to the Red Cross, Care, Doctors Without Borders, or any other relief agency of your choice, for the people devastated by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear “meltdown” in Japan.  Do you think that the planet just might be trying to tell us something?  Or, do you really believe that it’s all cyclical, and sunspot related?)   — YUR
