“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.” — William Shakespeare
(Happy Valentine’s Day, Everybody! So, I’m reading and re-reading this line from Shakespeare. And, I’m thinking: Oh, crap! Here is yet another thing that I never realized, in all of my life. Cupid is BLIND!!! So, I scour all the images that Google has on Cupid, looking for some indication that he is – physically – blind. Of course, I don’t find anything, because it’s just me – again – being too damn literal! Besides “blind” I was taking “painted” way too literally. I see, now, that Bill was just taking poetic license, and was just equating Cupid with love, itself. And, of course, that love is blind. I get. I appreciate it. But, this is yet another example of why I have little patience with poetry. It’s probably also why I’m not all that good in the games that people play. I’m no doctor, although I would play one on TV, but maybe this is why I identify with Dr. Temperance Brennan, on “Bones“. Now, she is literal . . . to the nth power, but I can relate to how she sees many things as . . . nonsensical. Now, go out and get some flowers and cards and candy for your sweetie. Because, they’re not going to buy your “rationality” story.) — YUR
