Haggling

Image via Wikipedia

Visual Description:  One plastic crook haggling with another.

NOSOW  =  SWOON,  PIGER  =  GRIPE,  TIPPUL  =  PULPIT,  NEPELS  =  SPLEEN   —   Giving us:  SNGRIULTSPL

Clue/Question:  A politician will do this when faced with a knotty problem.

Answer:  PULL STRINGS

(This one took some getting!  Made me wonder if I had a clue word, or two, wrong.  It’s always a little tough when you only have 2 vowels, out of 11 letters, to work with.  I guess that’s supposed to be a cigar, but it looks more like a big ol’ fattie to me.  Do good, friends.)   — YUR

I found no clues in the picture today but even more confusing is why they put quotations around “strings”. Am I missing a clue or something?

There was no visual clue, Glenn. The clue was the word “knotty”. You tie laces, rope, and strings into knots. The cartoon was just to set up the sleazy exchange between the two pols.
