Clue/Question:  Even when prices increase, writing products are . . .

Answer:  STATIONARY

(Writing letters to home, from school . . . on paper? What a concept!  In an age of instant communication this must seem like the quaintest of ideas.  But, once upon a time there was no internet, hence no email.  “Texting” did not exist as a verb, because there were no cell phones.  Having your own phone – a land line – was a rarity for the average teen/student.  There was essentially one phone company – Ma Bell – and she made sure calling long distance wasn’t to be taken lightly.  There’d be one or two PAY Phones to a dorm – OK, the nicer ones might have one on each floor – and they were generally reserved for various levels of emergency.  So, when you wanted to tell friends and folks how you’re doing, and asking about the girl/guy you left behind, you had to put pen to paper . . . and write this thing called a “letter” . . . on paper.  Whether long, or short – SEND MONEY!!! – you’d take this “letter”, put it in an envelope, address it, put a postage stamp on it, and then you’d have to hump it over to a post office, or your mail room, and mail it.  After all that, it would take from 3 to 5 – or more – days to reach the person you were trying to communicate with.  Then, assuming they could reply right away, you’d finally hear back from them 3 to 5 – or more – days after all that.  With that 6 to 10 – or more – day process you’d better have something better to say than: S’up?  How r u? What’s that?  Today’s jumble?  Oh, yeah!  It was alright.  Blah, blah, blah – clue words.  Blah, blah, blah – scrambling.  And, blah, blah, blah – play on words, this kind of – archaic? – stationery is spelled with an “ery”.  Happy, now???  Rotten kids!)   — YUR
