(Tough) Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/26/10

Faith, to my mind, is a stiffening process, a sort of mental starch.”   —   E.M. Forster

(This was a man whose words were a truth that I subscribe to.  His works and words should be read and repeated often.)   —   YUR

(Fairly Tough) Jumble Spoiler – 08/26/10

Visual Description:  Long awaited clearance at the boarding gate.

PIMSK  =  SKIMP,  VAHNE  =  HAVEN,  MUTTUL  =  TUMULT,  EWSUIN  =  UNWISE   —   Giving us:  SIANTMTWS

Clue/Question:  What happened when the fog lifted at the airport.

Answer:  IT WASNT MIST

(Great clue words!  Great scrambling of the answer letters.  And, a very nice pun!  Another tribute to Wilco, and I think they reference Ft. Wayne from time to time, don’t they?  Have a good one, folks.  Be good, do good!)   —   YUR

(Tough) Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/25/10

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply give you courage.”   —   Lao Tzu

(My first Lao Tzu quote!  At least under this particular spelling of his name.  This sounds like the basis of my – and most other successful – marriage(s).  No “I”s, “A”s, “THE”s, “AND”s, “ARE”s, “FOR”s, “NOT”s, or “BUT”s today!  Luckily, there were enough “E”s to figure things out.  But, I had to get “SOMEONE” first, before things really started to jibe.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 08/25/10

Visual Description:  A good luck sign at the coronation?

UNAFA  =  FAUNA,  REBBI  =  BRIBE,  GONING  =  NOGGIN,  TIDOAR  =  ADROIT   —   Giving us:  NEGRI

Clue/Question:  When the shower dampened the coronation, it became a . . .

Answer:  REIGN

(These guys must live in one of the Mid-Atlantic states, because after a late Spring and Summer of drought and heatwaves – BUT GLOBAL WARMING IS JUST A LIBERAL MYTH, RIGHT? – we’ve seen 3 straight days of rain and cloudy skys.  We needed the rain badly, and I’m sure most of us are glad to give the AC some time off.  The electric bills have been HUGE!  Oh, well.  Great clue words today!  The guys probably should be a little more sensitive to some of their readers.  “REBBI” is a variant of Rebbe, which is derived from Rabbi.  Associating the word “BRIBE”  with “REBBI” could be viewed as insulting.  Yer Uncle thinks the world – especially the U.S. – is much too caught up in political correctness, but that’s life in the 21st century!  Be good, do good, people!)   —   YUR

Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/24/10

There are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.”   —   Gilbert K. Chesterton

(I think they might have been trying to throw us off a bit by writing out “Gilbert” when most people just look for the “G” in G.K. Chesterton.  The quote wasn’t all that cryptic.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 08/24/10

Visual Description:  Gary Cole, reprising his role from “Office Space”?

FREEW  =  FEWER,  RUHTT  =  TRUTH,  VOORDE  =  OVERDO,  BIGTLE  =  GIBLET   —   Giving us:  EETTORBLT

Clue/Question:  What the marginal worker did to better his lot.

Answer:  A LOT BETTER

(Looks like poor Milt is about to have a coronary!  While the retro-dressed “manager” looks as fresh as the proverbial daisy.  Guys – and gals – like Milt always end up doing, at least, twice the work of their managers, for probably – if lucky -around half of the pay.  And, no doubt, Milt probably gets about half the time off as the “manager” does too.  More work and more stress. Less pay, benefits and respect.  Our Milt is the American worker.  The American hero!)   —   YUR

Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/23/10

I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”   —   Pablo Picasso

(I wonder how long it took him to come up with that comeback?  Ya gotta figure he just got SO tired of people asking him:  Is that how you see things?)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 08/23/10

Visual Description:  Big meeting at the factory assembly line.

RUYLB  =  BURLY,  TINFE  =  FEINT,  PHULED  =  UPHELD,  GAIMBY  =  BIGAMY   —   Giving us:  RLITHLGA

Clue/Question:  When the foreman said he was all wrong, the workes said he was . . .

Answer:  ALL RIGHT

(Some nice clue words, today!  I got caught up on “bigamy”.  I mis-read the M for an N and initially came up with baying.  I only caught myself after looking at the cartoon/clue/question.  It wasn’t THE toughest jumble ever, but it was . . . )   —   YUR

Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 08/22/10

I went on a diet, swore off drinking and heavy eating, and in fourteen days I lost two weeks.   —   Joe E. Brown

(This guy was funny back in the days when you didn’t need to curse to get a laugh . . . assuming you were any good.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  Why the team hired the massage therapist.

Answer:  HE FILLED A “KNEAD

(VERY good!  Good clue words, nice scrambling of the answer letters, and a good pun!  They even managed to give us quotation marks . . . rare for a Sunday!  Be good, do good, people!)   —   YUR
