Memorial Day Cryptoquote Spoiler – 05/31/10

This will remain the land of the free only as long as it is the home of the brave.”   — Elmer Davis

(Fortunately, Elmer never lived to see the implementation of the USA PATRIOT Act.  The most oversold word of this new millennium?  “SECURITY”  With this in mind, and on this auspicious day, I think we all should remember the words of the late great General Douglas MacArthur:  There’s no security on this earth.  Only opportunity. Peace be with you, my friends.)   — YUR

This last Saturday at the peace vigil I attend regularly every Saturday afternoon, I arrived to find our sidewalk in disarray, and shouting voices, angry faces shouting and pushing a couple of members of our vigil to the ground, rounding it off with a few swift kicks. The offensive attack apparently began when a few of the veterans from the second world war who just as regularly demonstrate their pro-war sentiments came striding across the street from their position on the opposite corner apparently intent on teaching us a lesson with their pushing and yelling, which quickly downgraded to kicking our people, who to their credit, did not fight back, nor engage in the angry rhetoric.

I realized as I watched this unfolding that what I was watching was in fact, the essence of the struggle between these two opposing forces. War vs. peace, but so much more than that. I was witnessing the culture of the warriers “might is right” appoach vs. the culture of peace makers who will remain non violent no matter how provoked. Our people only sought to restrain the attackers, and never allowed an escalation of the situation by remaining peacefully absorbed in what they were doing. It became evident that you can’t fight someone who will not fight. One of our people suggested that perhaps they should return to their side of the street. And seeing how ineffectual their attempt to ruffle us had been, they went back to their own side.

The word “culture” is an important one to use when describing a custom or manner in which we evolve in society. Human beings, unlike any other living creature on earth have the mental capacity to reasonably cleanse themselves of ways of thinking that offend the ethics we claim to believe in. Unfortunately, those who refuse to do that homework for whatever reason are responsible for the retardation of our own evolution as a species, and we are suspended in a kind of hypocritical state where we cannot grow or thrive.

My hat is off to the peace makers. I never cease to learn more about how to fully become one myself. I suspect that would involve being in a constant state of becoming, and that beats the Hell out of war in my opinion.
