Global Warming Deniers on

Can someone, please, tell me: What is the big attraction with the Global Warming Walrus, who all too frequently claims the lead WordPress page?  Are there really that many global warming denying DOPES floating around on WordPress?   It would seem to be a matter of “hits”, unless the people who run are also major Global Warming Deniers.  Are they mainly British? Is The Walrus a “real” person, or is he merely designed to be the unassuming shlub who can be trusted as an “expert”?

The US in particular has a sizeable population of global warming sceptics. They believe that man-made global warming is fake and fabricated purely so that special interests can gain from it financially.

The oil industry lobbyists are very effective with their propaganda, Sid.

Hi YUR – been a while, but we’ve both been sick and very busy, had little time for keeping up, sorry. Congrats on your 24th… we’re only in our 20th… and hope you have many more! Good point on Halladay’s no-hitter and the poor local media coverage – it was an injustice to him, IMO. Since then I’ve seen a real wave of coverage, but not a single source that covered his actual record of regular AND post-season no-bitters. Go Roy!

As far as the comments above, actually Sid has a point about global warming deniers, whether he realized it or not – “special interests” ARE trying to “gain from it financially” – except the special interests in this case ARE the oil industry, which plans on keeping the “top dog” position as suppliers of energy products (and their obscene profits!) as long as possible by suppressing attempts to replace them with more environmentally friendly sources of energy.

Also, it IS a difficult question, since the energy content/price factors of oil and coal (and now natural gas – the up-and-comer), have been so favorable and hard to match with any other source, except those already stretched to the limit, like hydropower. All of the new technologies are more expensive, like wind, solar, and hydrogen, and are made less “attractive” in the short term by the difficulty of ramping up to economies of scale, so the oil honchos figure they are in the catbird’s seat and merely need to keep public opinion on their side, or at least turned against the facts of global warming, in order to retain their position (and obscene profits – did I mention their obscene profits?!!?).

Add to that the fact that the majority of Americans seem to have learned to get the information they use to decide their positions on such subjects without the necessity for actual facts to back them up – read that “emotionally” instead of “factually” – and you have what amounts to ignorance driving public opinion, no? What a shame – but then, a majority of Americans now deny evolution despite the preponderance of evidence, including actual examples happening in our lifetimes. Add to that a swell of “young-earthers” – who can’t even see that light from distant stars has taken MUCH longer than 6,000 years to reach us – something we can all see with our own eyes – and you have a generation of adults who have succumbed to ignorance and superstition.

Yes, the climate has changed many times in the past – probably one of the reasons humans exist in the first place, as we seem to have evolved in response to drastic climate changes in Africa millions of years ago – yet we have clear evidence that atmospheric CO2 has risen right along with fossil fuel use, and to dangerous levels; add to that the simple fact that it’s a factor we can alter if we try, and we might have a possibility of “rescuing” the planet. OTOH, we deny it’s happening and do nothing, and we’ll all find out if global warming is the disaster so many scientists believe – probably when it’s too late to turn back.

Again, what a shame – how much we could accomplish if we only stuck to the facts, and how much we stand to lose by inaction, which may yet push the environment past a dreadful tipping point, and possibly threaten our very existence.

And in case it isn’t clear from my little diatribe, I firmly subscribe to the dangers of man-made global warming and the necessity to act or face disaster.

Nice to hear from you John! Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you’re all feeling better. Thanks, for the well wishes! It’s embarrassing how most of our local media fawns over the Yankees. I guess with the impending death of newspapers some editors will do just about anything to appease the teeming masses, and fairness and relevance be damned. I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty more from Mr. Halladay in the coming weeks.

I’ve said for years, to anyone who would listen to me, that the only way we’ll really make any headway into alternative sources of energy is when some of the big oil/energy fat cats can find an angle (read stranglehold). Is it any coincidence that T. Boone Pickens is now a big proponent of wind power?

Fortunately, the costs of alternative energies are coming down more and more. Eventually, they won’t be able to rely on that old saw!

FOX News and friends have done a very good job of dumbing down America. They just appeal to the viewers’ emotions – mainly fear and anger – and not to their “intellect” – if that’s what you can call what the people who willingly watch FOX have.

I find it very ironic that so many of the same people who deny the theory of evolution also deny the notion of man-made global warming. Supposedly, we were “created” – out of whole cloth – in His (God’s) image, and that He gave us dominion over the earth, but somehow we’re not powerful enough to effect our atmosphere. No. It’s all sun spots, volcanic activity, “normal” cycles and . . . wait for it . . . cow farts!

There’s a very good cartoon that one of the environmental groups (I think it might be the Union of Concerned Scientists) is running, that shows these two “scientists” standing on the beach of an island. With clipboards in hand, and a 40 foot wave about to clobber them, one of them says: “The data don’t predict a tsunami with absolute certainty. I say we wait.” THIS is the promise of the global warming deniers.

It is just so hard for people of reason to *reason* with people of denial. They’re like kids with their hands over their ears screaming La La La La La! I’m not listening to you!!!

What are we going to do, John? Put Captain Paul Watson in charge of mankind? Now THAT would put the fear of God into these denial dopes!
