(I think helping your children to understand about compassion and empathy is every bit as important as their formal education. Facts and formulas are a big part of the cold, hard truths of this world. However, attention has to be paid to the warmer, softer aspects as well.
Because of the coded word “degree” I was a little hesitant to designate the Ms in the puzzle as the letter E. No single letter words, and no: ARE, ONE, THE, USE – pretty rare, actually - or AGE. I guess correctly on X->L and N->I which led me to M->E. At that point “college degree” jumps out. So I had an easier time of it and was able to use a pen.
