The key word in the clue was *bachelor*, JW. Their activity/profession/sport was semi-irrelevant, accepting that snow skiers would avoid the state of Florida (the map) like a confirmed bachelor would avoid the state of matrimony.

Am I dense? I don’t get what skiing has to do with “matrimony”.
